    question:

How much does it cost to build a steel frame kit house after the frame is erected?
How much would it cost in materials to build a kit home from the frame stage? Materials only and the house is 250 square metres. I am in Queensland Australia

    answer:

I just finished 44 steel frame houses like the one you speak of, here in Ontario, Canada. it took me and thwo other men 4 weeks to build a unit! Our total finishing cost, including the steel feame house kit was ,000.oo!!! the houses came out gorgeous, and were really well built and insulated. the fols who bought them paid 0,000.oo to 5,000.oo each!! We put a deck on a few, and a couple had a 20ft x 20ft storage shed at the end of the drive.

You should be able to finish the exterior and interior, for around 000.oo!!

    question:

can you please find me some good sites about radiata pine on the web? I can't seem to find any!?
For my tech assesment, I'm supposed to be researching the timber radiata pine, but I can't find any sites that have good info about them. I need to research their characteristics of the tree and timber, its uses in the building industry and where about does the tree grow in Australia. =]

    answer:

Pinus radiata (family Pinaceae) is known in English as Monterey Pine in some parts of the world (mainly in the USA, Canada and the British Isles), and Radiata Pine in others (primarily Australia, New Zealand and Chile).
It is a fast-growing tree, adaptable to a broad range of soil types and climates, though does not tolerate temperatures below about -15 C. Its fast growth makes it ideal for forestry; in a good situation, P. radiata can reach its full height in 40 years or so.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinus_radiata

Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) was originally named Pinus insignis or 'remarkable pine' - because it had such a dramatic impact on the world timber scene. It is suited to a considerable range of growing conditions, is easily raised and planted, and provides larger yields of usable timber in a shorter time than many native species.

The timber can be readily sawn, peeled, or converted to pulp, has good nail-holding power, works well, can be easily stained, and when treated with preservatives, is suitable for long-life applications in the ground.
    http://www.forest.nsw.gov.au/publication/forest_facts/pine/radiata/default.asp

Radiata Pine, botanical name Pinus Radiata D. Don, is native to California. It is characterized by the Yellowish white color of its wood, with slight color differences between its sapwood and heartwood. The growth rings produce a pronounced appearance. It is used for a wide variety of structural architectural, and manufacturing needs. Products made from Radiata Pine include windows, doors, mouldings, furniture, timbers, decking, fencing, pallet materials, veneer, plywood, MDF products and particle board.

In addition, Radiata Pine accepts pressure treatment very well and can be used in many applications where it is exposed to the weather or water. Because of its abundant availability, the economies of scale at which it can be produced and the virtually unending supply, Radiata Pine may be a much more competitive alternative to many other softwoods

    question:

Where did the plutonium for the bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki come from?

    answer:

    Hiroshima, gun type, uranium bomb:

The majority of the uranium came from a 1939 purchase of ore from the Shinlolobwe mine in the African Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) stored on Staten island

Additional ore came from German theft from Belgium and some whacked scientist horded it to make his planned fortune in radioactive medicine then America confiscated it and combined it with some of their own stock to make the first gun type device.

An additional interest point. The engineer that assembled the bomb witnessed a B-26 crash on Tinian the day before the planned pre flight assembly and decided to assemble the bomb in flight. The engineer made comments about how the two spheres where noticeably thermally hot to the touch.

The previously untested gun type device was terribly inefficient and only effectively used an amount of uranium that would weigh as much as a U.S. denomination quarter ([FAQ-answer].25) the remainder dispersed as a 'fissile bomb' material.

Additionally! The Indiana the ship that carried the device had the bomb welded to the deck to prevent 'sabotage'. This was done under tremendous time pressures...the military rumor mill in 'full tilt' one sailor exclaimed the crate as, "MacArthur's scented toilet paper' rumor logic supported this and stuck! The Indianapolis left port on a straight beeline to Tinian without regard for Japanese submarines and made it in record time burning out one of her boilers. Leaving Tinian for Australia the lowered speed may have contributed to her torpedo sinking with one of the greatest loss of sinking U.S. lives in WW2.

Oh! Just another history twist of fate! Tinian a Southern Island of Siapan was the first of the gore Kamikaze battles. The Japanese were under a rumor that the Emperor had commanded military & civilians to die in battle as a religious rite. The horror of such attacks installed a fear of the mainland invasion and greatly weighted the decision to use atomic weapons launched from that very group of islands!

One more! The Enola Gay lingered at Iwo Jima to pick up fighter escort. The famous Suribachi 'Marine flag raising photo funded a War Bond Drive producing more war fund money than all others combined and perhaps made the late war expenditures possible. At a time when trade nations were threatening to accept gold only, because of that photo Americans dug deeper into their pockets than ever before! Without that Ewo Jima photo there may have been no B-29's !

    question:

When Noah was asked to put a pair of animals in the ark, does it really mean...?
he went to Australia to pick the kangaroos and the platypus, to Malaysia for the Orangutan, Tamaraws and Tarsier in the Philippines, he went to the cold regions for the polar bear, to India for the tigers..considering the fact that there are animals that are only found in certain regions which were not found in the land of Noah..after the floods subside..did he released the animals or take them back where they belong ?

    answer:

How did all the animals fit on Noah's Ark?
Skeptics claim that the Ark could not have carried all the different types of animals. How many types of animals did Noah need to take? Genesis 6:19: "And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive." Genesis 7:2,3: "Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female. Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth" Noah did not need to take sea creatures. Plants could have survived as seeds on floating mats of vegetation. Insects and other invertebrates were small enough to have survived on these mats as well. About 16,000 individual animals had to be aboard the ark.The median size of all animals on the ark would actually have been that of a small rat, 11% would not have been much larger than a sheep. One question is "How could you fit all those huge dinosaurs on the Ark?" Of 668 dinosaurs, only 106 weighed more than ten tons when fully grown. The largest animals were probably represented by 'teenage' or even younger specimens. The median size of all animals on the ark would actually have been that of a small rat, while only about 11% would have been much larger than a sheep.
The Ark measured 300x50x30 cubits (Genesis 6:15), which is about 459x75x44 feet, so its volume was 1.54 million cubic feet. This is the equivalent volume of 522 standard American railroad stock cars, each of which can hold 240 sheep. If the animals were kept in cages with an average size of 20x20x12 inches, that is 4800 cubic inches, the 16,000 animals would only occupy 42,000 cubic feet or 14.4 stock cars. Even if a million insect species had to be on board, it would not be a problem, because they require little space. There would be plenty of room on the Ark for the animals with plenty left over for food, bedding etc. Standard recommended floor space requirements for animals that all of them together would have needed less than half the available floor space of the Ark's three decks. This arrangement allows for the maximum amount of food and water storage on top of the cages close to the animals.
Food requirements: Before the flood all animals were plant eaters. Only after the flood did God tell Noah "kill and eat". The Ark would probably have carried compressed and dried foodstuffs, and probably a lot of concentrated food. Perhaps Noah fed the cattle mainly on grain, plus some hay for fiber. The volume of foodstuffs would have been only about 15% of the Ark's total volume. Drinking water would only have taken up 9.4% of the volume. This volume would be reduced further if rainwater was collected.
Excretory requirements: It is doubtful that humans had to clean the cages every morning. Possibly they had sloped floors or slatted cages, where the manure could fall away from the animals and be flushed away (plenty of water around!) or destroyed by vermicomposting (composting by worms) which would also provide earthworms as a food source. Very deep bedding can last for a year without needing a change. Absorbent material (e.g. sawdust, softwood, wood shavings and especially peat moss) would reduce the moisture content and hence the odor.
Hibernation: The space, feeding and excretory requirements were adequate even if the animals had normal day/night sleeping cycles. But hibernation is a possibility which would reduce these requirements even more. The Bible does not mention it, but it does not rule it out either. Some creationists suggest that God created the hibernation instinct for the animals on the Ark, but we should not be dogmatic either way. Skeptics argue that food taken on board rules out hibernation, but this is not so. Hibernating animals do not sleep all winter, despite popular portrayals, so they would still need food occasionally.
Conclusion: This has shown that the Bible can be trusted on testable matters like Noah's Ark. Many Christians believe that the Bible can only be trusted on matters of faith and morals, not scientific matters. But we should consider what Jesus Christ Himself told Nicodemus (John 3:12): "If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
    http://www.worldwideflood.com/
    http://www.creationscience.com/onlineboo
To those who believe that the Bible is myth and no evidence supports its veracity, you are wrong, again. There have been many archeological finds that verify the historic accounts in Scripture and no finds that conclusively refute it.

    question:

What's the best skateboard for first time skateboarding?
I've become really into skateboarding lately and I'm looking on eBay Australia and I don't know what do buy/look at. please help :)
How do I know what size I need? I'm not really understanding the sizes/widths.
    Also what about this board?
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/COMPLETE-31-CANADIAN-MAPLE-DECK-SKATEBOARD-54mm-wheels-/170761894331?pt=AU_Skateboarding&hash=item27c233b9bb#ht_5220wt_1139

    answer:

Good for you ..skateboarding is fun..
Like Nick said it does really not matter what type of board you get...
As long as you buy any name brand board its all good..
Even a blank deck would be a good board to begin skateboarding...As long as its good wood material.. These blanks are pretty good & affordable..
But name brands are always better but of course more expensive. so for a beginner it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a blank just to learn on it.. But if you decide to go with a name brand i recommend Girl skateboards & chocolate boards.. Plan b is good to..

Basically when it comes down to sizes it has to do with mainly the width of the board..
Theres 7.5" or seven inches & a half... These are the narrow boards.. These boards are pretty good for people with small shoe size.. But,not in all cases cause i wear 10" in shoe size & this size worked well for me for many years. One thing for you is that its easier for you to flip these small boards than trying to flip more wider boards.. Though these narrow decks tend to break a liitle easier than wider boards..
Another size is 7.75" a little more wider.. Pretty much similar ti 7.5" boards.. Those are good..
Then 8" boards in width are another choice..these boards are a little harder to flip .. But don't really snap or break that easily.. .Also with 8" boards you have more footing space so you land tricks easier... Then there is wider boards than 8" ..In my opinion those boards are to much... Can't really comment on them.. Cause never skated one before.

So in the end it just depends what you feel more comfortable with... What ever width you choose you will eventually get use to it& adapt to it..

I saw your link & i can say that its a pretty good choice.. Canadian maple wood is the best material in wood for a board.. Its strong & will not break easily.. Though make sure its what it is cause theres alot imitation outhere... The wheels 54" are fine.. So pretty much it looks good... .

    question:

What was the lifestyle like for convicts in the FIRST FLEET????

    answer:

Miserable boring deadly. Salt Pork and hard tack crawling with worms. Foul brackish water. Stiffling hot below decks most ships did not have hammocks but rather bed like shelves, a hard wooden platform with perhaps ten inches if you were lucky between face of bunk above. The stench of vomit urine feces unwashed bodies permeated the ships. A shower was a bucket of cold water or a rainstorm. Hours with nothing to do. Books & magazines were scarce for those who could read and could only be read when there was daylight. Candles were dangerous below decks and lanterns scarce. Mostly one lay in the bed with lice & other insects crawling over them desperately hoping the voyage would end.

Naturally there are those who make the most of bad situations. Conversations abounded and a few individuals tried to map out what they would do when they got to the end of the World.

Gonna toss links and verbage at you...
This article contradicts me a bit claiming there was good food... Hmm Hmm begrudgingly maybe when in Port but the long stretched in between plus check out the body count.
    http://australian-history.suite101.com/article.cfm/voyage_of_the_first_fleet
    ""Bound for Botany Bay
It was a perilous journey for small sailing vessels and one that could be expected to result in death for some of the people on board, particularly given the poor health of many of the convicts. Two factors, however, helped most of them survive the voyage to Australia.

First, in the transportation contract awarded to London merchant William Richards Jnr, payment was based on the number of convicts delivered to New South Wales, which meant the contractor had a vested interest in keeping them alive. Second, the First Fleet preparations took place under the keen and intelligent eye of the new colony s first Governor, Arthur Phillip, who insisted on convicts and marines being supplied with fresh beef and vegetables in the weeks before they sailed, to build up their strength for the long ordeal ahead of them.

Once at sea their diet was also an improvement on their prison fare. They benefited too from exercise, which was incorporated into their routine during the voyage, and from Phillip s insistence on a good standard of hygiene. He also organized fresh food stops for the fleet at Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope.

These measures reaped their reward in the general good health of the convicts when the First Fleet arrived at Botany Bay on January 18, 1788, then continued a short distance north in search of fresh water, landing at Port Jackson, in an area of the city now known as Sydney, on January 26, 1788.

    The First Australia Day
Of the 1500 people who had set out on the First Fleet, a total of 37, including 22 convicts, died during the voyage. This was considered a small percentage in view of the circumstances, but it is unlikely that many of the convicts felt cause for rejoicing when they first set foot on the apparently uninhabited shores of their new land. For them this was a new and alien prison. Most of them were destined to die there, unaware that these 1500 First Fleeters were the founders of the nation of Australia, and that January 26 would thereafter be celebrated as Australia Day."""

    http://www.australianhistory.org/first-fleet.php
""There were eleven ships in the First Fleet. They were all small ships that included two naval ships, six convict ships and three storeships for supplies. The six convict ships had specially built prisoners quarters below the decks. Guards and sentries stood watch around each ship. The decks were full of animal pens. Sheep, goats, poultry, dogs and cats were all taken to Botany Bay.
The storeships were loaded with enough supplies for two years. There were clothes, tools, building materials, plant seeds, furniture and even a portable canvas house for the governor. More than 1480 men, women and children sailed on the eleven ships of the First Fleet.
Most of the convict ships left from Portsmouth. The fleet was ready to leave on 12 May 1787 but the sailors on one ship demanded their pay and an extra night in town. So it was not until 13 May, at three o'clock in the morning, that the ships of the First Fleet left Portsmouth harbour. ""

Here is the detail one, just a snippet of a long informative artcle

    http://www.ulladulla.info/historian/ffstory.html
    http://home.vicnet.net.au/~firstff/story.htm
""The voyage from Cape Town to Botany Bay took about eight weeks. It was an uncomfortable passage as the ships were buffeted by rough seas. There was no let-up, even on Christmas Day.
It was Captain Phillip's plan to go on ahead and seek out the best possible site for the proposed settlement before the main fleet arrived. He therefore transferred to Supply' and split the convoy into three. Supply' would proceed alone; the three fastest transports, Alexander', Scarborough' and Friendship would follow at full speed; and Sirius' would escort the remainder of the Fleet at the best rate they could muster. As it happened, 'Supply' arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January. The second part of the Fleet followed within twenty-four hours, and the remainder of the Fleet made its appearance on the following day.
Phillip was not taken with Botany Bay as the site for his settlement, so he headed north to Port Jackson where (in his own words) he discovered:
...one of the finest harbours in the world, in which a thousand sail of the line might ride in perfect security.
By nightfall on 26 JANUARY 1788 Phillip's convoy was safely at anchor in Sydney Cove, named in honour of Lord Sydney""

    Peace

    question:

    What is a Merchant Marine?
What is the role of the Merchant Marine? Do they have anything to do with the marines or even the military?

    answer:

Ship transport is primarily used for the carriage of people and non-perishable goods, generally referred to as cargo.

Although the historic importance of sea travel has lost much importance due to the rise of commercial aviation, it is still very effective for short trips and pleasure cruises.

While slower than air transport, modern sea transport is a highly effective method of moving large quantities of non-perishable goods. More than 6 billion tons of cargo were delivered by sea in 2005. In addition to cargo carriage, one can consider scientific voyages and races as forms of ship transport. Transport by water is significantly less costly than transport by air for trans-continental shipping.

Ship transport is often international by nature, but it can be accomplished by barge, boat, ship or sailboat over a sea, ocean, lake, canal or river. This is frequently undertaken for purposes of commerce, recreation or military objectives. When a cargo is carried by more than one mode, the transport is termed intermodal.

Ships have long been used for warfare, with applications from naval supremacy to piracy, invasions and bombardment. Aircraft carriers can be used as bases of a wide variety of military operations.

Ship transport is used for a variety of unpackaged raw materials ranging from chemicals, petroleum products, and bulk cargo such as coal, iron ore, cereals, bauxite, and so forth. So called "general cargo" covers goods that are packaged to some extent in boxes, cases, pallets, barrels, and so forth. Since the 1960s containerization has revolutionized ship transport.

    [edit] History

    Main article: Maritime history

The first craft were probably types of canoes cut out from tree trunks. The colonization of Australia by Indigenous Australians provides indirect but conclusive evidence for the latest date for the invention of ocean-going craft; land bridges linked southeast Asia through most of the Malay Archipelago but a strait had to be crossed to arrive at New Guinea, which was then linked to Australia. Ocean-going craft were required for the colonization to happen.

Early sea transport was accomplished with ships that were either rowed or used the wind for propulsion, and often, in earlier times with smaller vessels, a combination of the two.

Also there have been horse-powered boats, with horses on the deck providing power [1].

Ship transport was frequently used as a mechanism for conducting warfare. Military use of the seas and waterways is covered in greater detail under navy.

In the 1800s the first steam ships were developed, using a steam engine to drive a paddle wheel or propeller to move the ship. The steam was produced using wood or coal. Now most ships have an engine using a slightly refined type of petroleum called bunker fuel. Some specialized ships, such as submarines, use nuclear power to produce the steam.

Pallets made their first major appearance during World War II, when the United States military assembled freight on pallets, allowing fast transfer between warehouses, trucks, trains, ships, and aircraft. Because no freight handling was required, fewer personnel were required and loading times were decreased.

A view of Seattle Container Terminal.

While rudimentary freight containers, then known as lift vans, were used in the United States as early as 1911, it was not until the 1950s that containers started to revolutionize freight transportation. One pioneering railway was the White Pass and Yukon Route, who acquired the world's first container ship, the Clifford J. Rogers, built in 1955, and introduced containers to its railway in 1956. Starting in the 1960s the use of containers increased steadily.

Standards for containers were issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) between 1968 and 1970, ensuring interchangeability between different modes of transportation worldwide. The containers became known as ISO containers for this reason. Either 20 feet or 40 feet, these "boxes" revolutionized not only the means of transport, but the logistic chain from the supplier to the final customer. Road, railway and even air transport adapted to make these boxes a "unit of intermodal transport." Once placed into the container, the goods do not undergo any other handling prior to reaching the destination. What is handled is thus the container and not the contents, eliminating the concept of "breaking bulk."

Containers are specially designed to be easily handled, stored, transported, and give a number of advantages:

    * fewer damages and breakages,
    * less loss and theft,
    * cheaper handling due to more efficiency in loading and discharge

An example of such a major intermodal project was the 0,000,000 Port of Oakland intermodal rail facility begun in the late 1980s.[1][2]

More and more, containers are transported aboard specialized integral container ships. The holds are arranged in a system of cells and rails, making it possible to quickly move containers in and out of the hold.

Economies of scale have dictated an upward trend in sizes of container ships in order to reduce costs. One limit on ship size is the "Suezmax" standard, or the largest theoretical ship capable of passing through the Suez Canal, which measures 14,000 TEUs. Such a vessel would displace 137,000 DWT, be 400 meters long, more than 50 meters wide, have a draft of nearly 15 metres, and use more than 85 MW to achieve 25.5 knots, specifications met by the Emma M rsk.

Beyond Suezmax lies the "Malaccamax" (for Straits of Malacca) ship of 18,000 TEUs, displacing 200,000 DWT, 470 meters long, 60 meters wide, 16 meters of draft, and using more than 100 MW for 25.5 knots. This is most likely the limit before a major restructuring of world container trade routes.[3] The biggest constraint of this design, the absence of a capable single engine, has been overcome by the MAN B&W K108ME-C.

The ultimate problem was the absence of a manufacturer capable of producing the propeller needed for transmitting this power, which would be about 10 metres in diameter, and weigh 130 tonnes. One has since been built for the Emma M rsk. Other constraints, such as time in port and flexibility of service routes are similar to the constraints that eventually limited the growth in size of supertankers.

As of the new M/V Emma M rsk container ships can carry up to 12,000 containers, and the total value of cargo per vessel can reach 0 million. The ceaseless transit of these containers (at any given time, between 5 million and 6 million units) entails a great deal of risk.

2005 registration of merchant ships (1,000 GRT and over) per country.[4]

A nation's merchant fleet comprises the ships that are used to transport cargo during times of peace and war. A country's merchant marine or Merchant Navy is the combination of the fleet with the people who man it. There are a number of terms applied to the people who operate the ships, from merchant sailor to merchant mariner, to simply sailor or mariner.

According to the 2005 CIA World Factbook, the world total number of merchant ships of 1,000 Gross Register Tons or over was 30,936. Statistics for individual countries are available at the List of merchant marine capacity by country.

    [edit] Professional mariners

For more details on this topic, see Seafarer's professions and ranks.

Seafarers hold a variety of professions and ranks, each of which carry unique responsibilities which are integral to the successful operation of a seafaring vessel. A ship's complement can generally be divided into four main categories: the deck department, the engineering department, the steward's department, and other.

    [edit] Deck department

For more details on this topic, see Deck department.

Officer positions in the deck department include but not limited to: Master and his Chief, Second, and Third officers. The official classifications for unlicensed members of the deck department are Able Seaman and Ordinary Seaman.

A common deck crew for a ship includes:

    * (1) Chief Officer/Chief Mate
    * (1) Second Officer /Second Mate
    * (1) Third Officer / Third Mate
    * (1) Boatswain
    * (2-6) Able Seamen
    * (0-2) Ordinary Seamen

    [edit] Engineering department

For more details on this topic, see Engineering department.

A ship's engineering department consists of the members of a ship's crew that operate and maintain the propulsion and other systems onboard the vessel. Marine Engineering staff also deal with the "Hotel" facilities onboard, notably the sewage, lighting, air conditioning and water systems. They deal with bulk fuel transfers, and require training in firefighting and first aid, as well as in dealing with the ship's boats and other nautical tasks- especially with cargo loading/discharging gear and safety systems, though the specific cargo discharge function remains the responsibility of deck officers and deck workers.

A common Engineering crew for a ship includes:

    * (1) Chief Engineer
    * (1) Second Engineer / First Assistant Engineer
    * (1) Third Engineer / Second Assistant Engineer
    * (1-2) Fourth Engineer / Third Assistant Engineer
    * (0-2) Fifth Engineer / Junior Engineer
    * (1-3) Oiler (unlicenced qualified rating)
    * (0-3) Greaser/s (unlicensed qualified rating)
    * (1-5) Entry-level rating (such as Wiper (occupation), Utilityman, etc)

American ships also carry a Qualified Member of the Engine Department. Other possible positions include Motorman, Machinist, Electrician, Refrigration Engineer, and Tankerman.

    [edit] Steward's department

For more details on this topic, see Steward's department.

A typical Steward's department for a cargo ship would be composed of a Chief Steward, a Chief Cook, and a Steward's Assistant. All three positions are typically filled by unlicensed personnel.

The chief steward directs, instructs, and assigns personnel performing such functions as preparing and serving meals; cleaning and maintaining officers' quarters and steward department areas; and receiving, issuing, and inventorying stores.

The chief steward also plans menus; compiles supply, overtime, and cost control records. May requisition or purchase stores and equipment. May bake bread, rolls, cakes, pies, and pastries.

A chief steward's duties may overlap with those of the Steward's Assistant, the Chief Cook, and other Steward's Department crewmembers.

In the United States Merchant Marine, in order to be occupied as a chief steward a person has to have a Merchant Mariner's Document issued by the United States Coast Guard. Because of international conventions and agreements, all chief cooks who sail internationally are similarly documented by their respective countries.

    [edit] Other Departments

For more details on this topic, see Seafarer's professions and ranks#Other.

Various types of staff officer positions may exist on board a ship, including Junior Assistant Purser, Senior Assistant Purser, Purser, Chief Purser, Medical Doctor, Professional Nurse, Marine Physician Assistant, and Hospital Corpsman, are considered administrative positions and are therefore regulated by Certificates of Registry issued by the United States Coast Guard. Pilots are also merchant marine officers and are licensed by the Coast Guard.

    [edit] Life at sea
The tanker SS Overseas Alice takes seas over the bow during a 1981 run from New Orleans to Panama.
The tanker SS Overseas Alice takes seas over the bow during a 1981 run from New Orleans to Panama.

Mariners live on the margins of society, with much of their life spent beyond the reach of land. They face cramped, stark, noisy, and sometimes dangerous conditions at sea. Yet men and women still go to sea. For some, the attraction is a life unencumbered with the restraints of life ashore. Sea-going adventure and a chance to see the world also appeal to many seafarers. Whatever the calling, those who live and work at sea invariably confront social isolation.

Findings by the Seafarer's International Research Center indicate a leading cause of mariners leaving the industry is "almost invariably because they want to be with their families." U.S. merchant ships typically do not allow family members to accompany seafarers on voyages. Industry experts increasingly recognize isolation, stress, and fatigue as occupational hazards. Advocacy groups such as International Labor Organization, a United Nations agency, and the Nautical Institute are seeking improved international standards for mariners.

Ocean voyages are steeped in routine. Maritime tradition dictates that each day be divided into six four-hour periods. Three groups of watchkeepers from the engine and deck departments work four hours on then have eight hours off watchkeeping. However there are many overtime jobs to be done daily. This cycle repeats endlessly, 24 hours a day while the ship is at sea. Members of the steward department typically are day workers who put in at least eight-hour shifts. Operations at sea, including repairs, safeguarding against piracy, securing cargo, underway replenishment, and other duties provide opportunities for overtime work. One s service aboard ships typically extends for months at a time, followed by protracted shore leave. However, some seamen secure jobs on ships they like and stay aboard for years.

In rare cases, veteran mariners choose never to go ashore when in port. Further, the often quick turnaround of many modern ships, spending only a matter of hours in port, limits a seafarer's free-time ashore. Moreover, some foreign seamen entering U.S. ports from a watchlist of 25 high-risk countries face restrictions on shore leave due to security concerns in a post 9/11 environment. However, shore leave restrictions while in U.S. ports impact American seamen as well. For example, the International Organization of Masters, Mates & Pilots notes a trend of U.S. shipping terminal operators restricting seamen from traveling from the ship to the terminal gate. Further, in cases where transit is allowed, special "security fees" are at times assessed.

Such restrictions on shore leave coupled with reduced time in port by many ships translate into longer periods at sea. Mariners report that extended periods at sea living and working with shipmates who for the most part are strangers takes getting used to. At the same time, there is an opportunity to meet people from a wide range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Recreational opportunities have improved aboard some U.S. ships, which may feature gyms and day rooms for watching movies, swapping sea stories, and other activities. And in some cases, especially tankers, it is made possible for a mariner to be accompanied by members of his family. However, a mariner s off duty time is largely a solitary affair, pursuing hobbies, reading, writing letters, and sleeping.

    question:

    deck plans and blue prints?
im looking for some one that can make custom deck plans and blue prints

    answer:

You're best option would be to get a local architect from a reputable firm to do them for you...

    1) They usually have more experience than some-student-who-just-passed-out and so you won't be risking a design flaw and
    2) Every country/city has its own set of building laws and so a local would be familiar with those and also, the way of drawing (example: the symbols used to represent certain materials in UK means a different material in Australia) so you'll be avoiding a possible mix-up with your builders.

    question:

In Yu-Gi-Oh, what are the official rulings to perform a synchro summon?
I live in Australia...My friends and I duel small time...recently an arguement came up with an older duelist who has experience in tournaments..he says that "the total levels of the monsters you send to the graveyard for a synchro summon can be of equal, or higher levels then the monster you are synchro summoning"..(of course naturally we all beleived him because he has experience in tournaments)..I have read the rulebook numerous times, and the tournament rulings for synchro summoning... and they all say that the levels have to equal the monster you are synchro summoning...help much!?
haha thanks soo much mate...i practically worship x-sabers and will eventually get around to making an x-saber deck once im through making my prismadiator deck...the reason that we all beleived him was because he's been in tournaments and none of my friends ever have

    answer:

that guy most be an idiot... of course the synchro materials lv must be EXACT, say it with me, EXACT of the synchro your about to summon. the reason for this is very simple, if you have only 2 monsters and ones a tuner and the lv of it total is for a lv 9 synchro and you dont have a lv 9 in your extra deck, then it will be ridiculus and very broken if you can synchro for anything equal or lower

    question:

UGG boots or Sperrys?? Help please, I need help ASAP?
Merry -late- Christmas to all!!! :D

Hmm well here's the thing, I dont know if I should buy UGGs or Sperrys.
The reason is that i've been wanting a pair of flat shoes because my Converse are all beat up and so are my Vans. They dont last long AT ALL. I really need a pair of "casual shoes" because I have running and boots. I like the Sperrys and Ice headd they lost a long time...so im hoping that If i do go with Sperrys they will last me into the Summer for when I go to the lake and ride the jet ski /boat

Are Sperrys good quality? And what do you think of the black sparkly Bahama Sperrys? I like those.

I have been wanting a pair of UGG Australia since...three or four years ago. My parents think they are wayy overpriced so they refuse to buy me a pair. That is why I bought myself Bearpaws. My first pair was 3 yrs ago, then 2 yrs ago I bought another Bearpaw. And I just recently bought another pair of Bearpaw.

I have to buy a new pair of Bearpaw every year because they start to slouch and the sole is not that durable. That is why im thinking of actually buying the 0 Ugg australia. My new bearpaws are all beat up!! And i take good care of them. Im so disappointed that they lasted about a month if not less.

Should I go with the Sperrys or the Uggs? Like I said, my parents refuse to buy me Uggs and also...i dont want then spending too much money on me. I currently have 0. Enough for a pair of Uggs...and enough for a pair os Sperrys. But I can only chose one or the other. Help please! Im going shopping with my mom today.

    answer:

Uggs are made of long - lasting material, where as Sperry's as you see are very decked out, but they do have very open material, by that i mean that if you bang them on the ground, or get them wet they do get ruined. Uggs, you can always get them clean or dry them yourself.

    question:

How much notice would we have if the CME were travelling directly towards the Earth; that is, how much time ..?
Light travels at roughly 300,000 km/sec. At this speed, it takes about 8.5 minutes (distance divided by the speed divided by the number of seconds in a minute) for the light from the Sun to reach the Earth. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is about 150,000,000 kilometers. How much notice would we have if the CME were travelling directly towards the Earth; that is, how much time would pass between when the light reaches us and the charged material reaches us? Express your answer in days. [Hint: If the light travel time is insignificant with respect to the time it takes for the charged material to reach us ignore it.
    --anws : 150,000,000 kilometers. /1025/3600/24 = 1.7 days

where is the 1025 come from ? and 1.7 days is the right anws?

    answer:

About half a day to a day depending on the power of the CME.

That's just enough time to prepare.

I would suggest a cosy deck chair, a warm blanket, a bottle of Cabernet Shiraz from South Australia and a dark site so you can enjoy the marvellous auroras that would result.

    Cheers!

    question:

    Do u luv UGGS?
Will u stop wearing them and please save the sheeps
The outside of the Uggs boot is real sheepskin

now will u stop wearing them and save the sheep?
    y/ynot

Currently exploiting more than 100 million miserable sheep, Australia produces 30 percent of all wool used worldwide. Australian ranchers perform a barbaric operation-called ""mulesing""-where they force live sheep onto their backs, restrain their legs between metal bars, and, without any painkillers whatsoever, slice dinner-plate-sized chunks of flesh from around their tail area. When sheep age and their wool production declines, they are of no use to wool farmers and so are discarded for slaughter. This results in the cruel live export of 6.5 million sheep every year from Australia to the Middle East and North Africa, where sheep are crammed aboard multitiered open-deck ships. Nearly 800,000 sheep enter the live export trade from the U.K. and are slaughtered abroad.

Wat part of sheep and skin do u not understand?
UGG Australia uses only the best quality sheepskin exclusively. Twin-faced sheepskin is used in many of our core products. A piece of twin-faced sheepskin has been treated on both the fleece side, and the skin side.

The wool of genuine sheepskin is extremely dense (more-so than any synthetic), which provides for a more comfortable and durable material.

Fleece breathes, wicks moisture away, and allows air to circulate, keeping feet dry.

Sheepskin is naturally water resistant & therefore small amounts of moisture will not seep through or damage it.

UGG Australia sheepskin is naturally thermostatic & therefore will keep bare feet warm in temperatures as low as -30 F and cool in temperatures as high as 80 F (Sheepskin will naturally insulate by keeping feet warm in the winter & cool in the summer.)

The sheep that we use have finer wool & cleaner skin

    question:

    Liveaboard Houseboat Cost?
    Hi...

I have a pretty keen interest in taking on a liveaboard houseboat lifestyle.

I have a few questions, and was hoping to get a little info from someone whom has perviously or currently lived aboard a houseboat. So if you have experience living aboard please help me out!

I am looking to spend about 000 maybe 000 if she is perfect, on a boat I believe this will get me something relatively nice and ideal. I am one single person. I require a double bed space, reasonable clothing cupboard space and an upper deck, and the vital amities. I am looking to buy and live in Australia. QLD/NSW is this a reasonable amount?

Whats the rough average monthly cost of living aboard. One Person.
Electricity? 1-2hours of tv or computer time a day, weekends perhaps a few hours of stereo use. Also how common are solar powered boats and would this be cheaper?

Gas, if need be for heat? (a shower a day, a cooking meal a day)

Fuel: I would not be traveling to often, on the occasionally weekend I may do up to 80km give or take. And if I m not doing that engine run checks. Relocation would be the only other big chunk out of the fuel but I am not looking to count that into monthly fuel cost.

However in the event of traveling how much is the average single person sized houseboat(which I am guessing would be around 36/40 feet) going to cost in fuel on a trip about 170km long.

Also while moving are you allowed to anchor and stay over night in your houseboat without being at a marine birth? If so how do you find out where this is and is not allowed?

What are liveaboard marina costs like? Can you stay for monthly periods? Maybe even a year? Are there clubs / or member kind of situations where you pay a monthly / yearly fee which allows you to birth in certain locations? If so what are these fees and locations like? Also how do you find out where liveaboard marinas are located?

    Internet?

Alcohol? What are the rules with drinking aboard a live aboard house boat?

I think thats all for now, I know my questions are pretty detailed, anyone who has the time it will be very much appreciated to hear from someone whom has actually had a few years experience living aboard! It is a big decision for me, I am in love with the idea but need to know the realistic costs, the marine birthing and pricing is what I am most clueless about.

    Thank you

    answer:

wow that's alot of questions, but i'll try to hit the high spots. i've lived on my 34' sport fish/express cruiser for 4 years with my girl friend and may not ever live in a house again, if that gives you any idea about the life style. it will be difficult for me to give you exact prices in your area, as i live on the gulf coast in alabama. fuel economy on boats is generally measured in gallons per hour. don't expect much more than 1 mile per gallon.also marina fuel is higher , even tho there is no road tax involved. i bring my fuel in, in 55 gal drums, but if your marina sells fuel(mine doesn't) don't expect them to be that nice. slip rent for liveaboards here averages about .00 per foot. i was lucky enough to find a nice marina that charges a flat fee of 0.00 per month. had to fight with the power company to get a residential rate, as they want to charge commercial rate for boats for some reason.power will be higher, boats aren't insulated that well. i have an 8,000 btu a/c with a 3,500 watt heater. a reverse cycle cruise air is more efficient. i pay up to 0.00 a month in the winter. there is NEVER enough space for all of your stuff. it may be difficult if you are a material person. if you aren't going to use something every month, you don't need it. i bought a storage building to keep some things in, but it's a pain at best. then there's haul out costs. you will need to haul the boat every few years to check/repaint the bottom and running gear.barnacles are not nice and will kill your speed/fuel economy. as far as pricing? i did a repower on an older 47' not long ago that cost ,000.00 for the engines installed alone. a marine surveyor is worth his weight in gold to avoid getting ripped off. hope this helps. feel free to contact me through yahoo if you think i can help. good luck!

The sheep that we use have finer wool & cleaner skin

    answer:

No uggs for me as they are 'UGG'ly.

I do have some leather (cowskin) Eccos. That I wouldn't trade for anything! Best pair of shoes I have ever bought, they're water proof, look nice, and most importantly I can walk all day in them. I've NEVER had a non-leather shoe that even comes close to these in durability and comfort. Atleast not for all-day on your feet wear. I mean I have some different canvas/synthetic shoes that were comfy - but My feet would kill me after standing in them at work for 14+ hours. Not so with the leather.

I have to be on my feet to work. Work = Survival. So Damn the sheep and cows! Give me good shoes!!!

    answer:

No. Uggs are the most overrated and the ugliest fashion trend out there. I have no idea why so many people think they have to have them.

    question:

How do I stop possums eating my vegetables from my patio?
Have been growing fruit and veggies on the patio with the kids. They were going so well and the kids and I were really proud of what we were producing. We were just about ready to harvest our first lot of strawberries, capsicums and tomatos to find that the whole lot had been demolished over night. The kids were devastated. It is illegal here in Australia to catch them and relocate them or kill them (which I wouldn't anyway) our area seems to be dominated by possums and being aware of the problem I stuck a toy penguin out on the deck and moved every night which seemed to deter them for a week (there were previous signs of them being around)
It's disheartening when your trying to teach your kids something good and in the end they don't get to taste the fruits of there labour and what they have managed to achieve
We are not allowed to catch possums in australia it is illegal...plus the suburbs are "the wild" for them - but thanks.

The netting might work? Not quite sure how I would construct something to cover the vegetables though.

The possums are a brush tailed possum, I don't think there are opussums in Australia
I would very much love to get a dog but sadly I don't think I'm quite yet prepared to take on another "child" I will try and figure out a wire/netting type thing as 2 others have suggested. Don't really want a huge wire cage on my patio though but it might be my only option

    answer:

Mosquito netting will not work. Opossums destroy window screen material so mosquito netting wouldn't even slow them down.

I suggest some stronger material such as welded wire called Hardware Cloth in the USA. It is rigid enough that the Opossum can climb on it without collapsing it, but can't tear through it. The square holes in the wire is large enough insects can fly through to pollinate the peppers and strawberries.

    question:

I want to get a car pimping flash mob together.?
My friend and her family are trying to get their mini bus ready for the road for an a cross Australia Road trip.
She is one of the most kind and generously community minded people I know and I feel she needs a bit of a pick me up and Id like to give that pick me up in the form of a pimped out ride, or at least a ride that is ready to hit the highway.

I want this flash mob to be skilled in the trade for mechanic and decking out etc, and the rest can make the bus psychedelic on the exterior.

She would be so happy to be finally able to pack up and leave on her dream adventure with her family...But I dont know where to start or how to get people to give back their time free of charge for this wonderful family.

    Help.
    she already owns the bus.

    answer:

Follow the example on MTVs Pimp My Ride show.

Would your friend give permission for this to be done? Get her family involved.

Make a list of everything you need.

Create a free website using http://www.wix.com so that you can share the link with others. Upload pictures of the Before and share a brief story about your reason and goals. You could make a youtube style video sharing your idea.

Pick a date (you may have to poll those going to be involved in the event by offering dates. It will likely take more than 1 day if the work is extensive.)

Ask people and businesses to donate their time, skills and materials. You could also have a fundraiser to pay for some of the items or materials that can't be donated. Consider asking a local art school to help you with decorating the bus as a school project!

As each agrees, put their information on the site as a way of advertising. Also, see if local new stations, newspapers, bloggers and other using social media will cover or report your story. This is another bonus for those that help as it promotes their business.

Take video and pictures of the work in progress to post to the site and youtube.com or to share with people writing about or covering the event.

Plan a party to reveal the new ride to your friend at the end of the day.

Good luck on your event for your friend!

    question:

    Easy 10 points!!!!!!!!!!?
what were the conditions of the first fleet like, did the convicts get sick.
what are some personal stories from convicts about the conditions on the ships or of the places they visited.
how long did the first fleet take all up and was the weather good or bad
and also does anyone know who Ann Smith is in regard to the first fleet
y was captain authur phillip suited 2 be captain
who was the women hung for burglary............sorii guys i am really not getting history...thanx for all your help

    answer:

"During the voyage there were 22 births (13 boys, 9 girls), while 69 people either died, were discharged, or deserted (61 males and 8 females). As no complete crew musters have survived for the six transports and three storeships, there may have been as many as 110 more seamen"

"With fine weather the convicts were allowed on deck, and on 3 June 1787 the fleet anchored at Santa Cruz at Tenerife. Here fresh water, vegetables and meat were taken on board. Phillip and the chief officers were entertained by the local governor, while one convict tried unsuccessfully to escape. On 10 June they set sail to cross the Atlantic to Rio de Janeiro, taking advantage of favourable trade winds and ocean currents.

The weather became increasingly hot and humid as the fleet sailed through the tropics. Vermin, such as rats, and parasites such as bedbugs, lice, cockroaches and fleas, tormented the convicts, officers and marines. Bilges became foul and the smell, especially below the closed hatches, was over-powering. On Alexander a number of convicts fell sick and died. Tropical rainstorms meant that the convicts could not exercise on deck, and were kept below in the foul, cramped holds. On the female transports, promiscuity between the convicts and the crew and marines was rampant. In the doldrums, Phillip was forced to ration the water to three pints a day."
    .
    .
    .
    .
"On 26 January 1788, the fleet weighed anchor and by evening had entered Port Jackson. The site selected for the anchorage had deep water close to the shore, was sheltered and had a small stream flowing into it. Phillip named it Sydney Cove, after Lord Sydney the British Home Secretary. This date is still celebrated as Australia Day, marking the beginnings of the first British settlement."

Left on May 13, 1787, arrived January 26 1788. Was about 7 months long.

Follow my link and at the bottom it has a list of a bunch of people who were on the first fleet and it has some of their stories.

There were 3 convicts on the first fleet named Ann Smith.

"She was tried at Old Bailey, London on 30 August 1786 for stealing a pewter pint pot with a value of 1 shilling. She was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Lady Penrhyn aged about 30 at that time (May 1787). Her occupation was listed as nurse"

"She was tried at Winchester, Hampshire on 1 March 1785 for stealing with a value of 320 shillings. She was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Charlotte with age unknown. She had no occupation recorded. She died in 1837. "

"She was tried at Old Bailey, London on 18 April 1787 for stealing material with a value of 60 shillings. She was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England on the Prince of Wales with age unknown. Her occupation was listed as nurse. "
